Golfing in January Here I Come

Posted on Oct 31, 2008 under tips | No Comment

I am so excited!  This morning there was more frost on the lawn than usual and that means just one thing.  The winter is coming and golf season is right around the corner.  That’s right I just said golf season.  Oh, the glories of being a retired and a snowbird.

Last year after Christmas we went to Arizona and fell in love with a charming retirement community.  We bought a winter home there and spent the cold months of January and February golfing to our hearts content.  My drive off the tee wasn’t where I wanted it to be, so I spent the summer practicing my swing with a training club by Medicus.  I really think the effort has paid off, but we’ll know for sure when we head back down at the end of December.  I am so looking forward to it and I won’t even give a second thought to all of the poor golfers here searching for their orange balls in the snow.

Found an Old Fender Musicmaster Guitar

Posted on Oct 15, 2008 under Random | No Comment

My wife made me go out to garage sales last weekend. Usually this is just shear torture but this weekend it was different. This one house was having a massive sale, like an estate sale but without being overpriced. We got to this one early, which was good. As I wandered about I saw this little guitar without any strings and I had to get closer look.

Upon closer investigation it turned out to be a Fender Musicmaster guitar. It was covered with grime and some rust but the price tag was a mere $75. I grabbed it and paid for it right away. After a little investigation I figured out that this guitar was from 1964 and was probably worth at least $1000 if not more. How cool is that! Now I’ve got to decide if I sell it or not. Decisions decisions.

Hearing Aids Digital Genius

Posted on Oct 02, 2008 under Gadgets | No Comment

I have a little genius inside my hear. I like to refer to it as Albert. You might be wondering what the heck I’m talking about. Well, It’s my hearing aids digital genius of course. The hearing aid is a genius because it is able to automatically sense when there is back ground noise and then filter it out. This is such an improvement from my last hearing aid which used to give me a ton of feed back. This was especially a problem when I was out doors and there was a lot of background sound. It’s not been an issue since I got Abert though. I’m pretty sure we are best friends now. I can’t believe I suffered all those years with those god awful analog hearing aids. Albert and I have a date now so I’ll have to write more later.

Reality TV Isn’t Too Real

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under Random | No Comment

One of the things that I hate about watching, or trying to watch the t.v. is that all of the reality shows are now starting to show reruns.  I guess the writers and producers have run out of original ideas on what reality television shows to make.

I hate reality tv plain and simple.  When “reality” tv first started out it was cool.  It seemed, well, real!  There was a certain feeling about it that it was real.  Now it just seems rehearsed, like every move is orchestrated for dramatic feelings for the tv crowd to suck them into the plot, and scam.

Take American Idol for instance.  Have you watched that show?  I can’t tell if it’s fake or not, some of it sure is doctored for dramatic effect.  Like Asia’h Epperson.  Did her dad really die and she went ahead and did her audition?  Did she miss the funeral?  Who knows!

What about Survivor?  Have you seen MTv lately?  What happened to actually showing music videos?

Man, I hate reality tv..enough about that rambling before I blow a gasket!  Now, where the hell’s my remote…

Does a hip hop beat matter?

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 under Music | No Comment

Somebody recently asked me to consider rap music and hip hop in general–what is it that makes you like a song? A study I once read said that all there was to music was the bass line–the pounding was like a drug on your brain, forcing it to release endorphins and causing pleasure for your brain.

So when a rap star is consider buying hip hop beats what does he do? Does he see which song gives him the biggest rush, what feels right or does he measure things like bass content and other rap beat components that cause the brain to register pleasure?

It’s definitely something worth looking into…

The Oakland Raiders and Gene Simmons

Sitting here watching the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders made me start to think about some things tonight. Schools back in session, Fall is rolling in strong, the crazies are all out in full force in Oakland Stadium dressed in full raider garb. Made me start to think about some of the holiday’s coming up with how some of those crazies are dressed for the game. Some literally look like they are wearing Gene Simmons Halloween Costumes and wearing them well.

I’ll admit it, I’ve dressed like the rocker a time or two myself but I don’t know where some of these guys get some of their stuff. Mine never looked this good. I’ve got to get me some of those spiked shoulder pads to go with my Gene Simmons costume. If I get them, you can guarantee that I’ll break the costume out of the closet and go full force with the platform boots and makeup and all. Gonna have to grab a wig though too as my hairs not nearly long enough to go up in the forehead pony tail anymore.

Diagnosed and Still Optimistic

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under Health | No Comment

Today I’ve been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis. It sounds terrible, but I can assure you it doesn’t hurt that much. I was a bit depressed in the beginning, when the doctor told me the news, but after a while, especially after he explained me what does this mean and how I can continue living my normal life with only a few precaution measures, I felt much better. Unfortunately I’ll have to give up one of my passions, gardening. Exposing myself to pollens is very dangerous, because my allergy can turn into anaphylaxis over night and get me killed by suffocation. Did I scare you? I’m sorry, I just wanted you to know that today I gave up gardening for good. Maybe I’ll start fishing.

Nada Surf Rocks

One band that never fails to give back is Nada Surf. This is by far one of my favorite groups. The guys have been together since about 1992 and have a song that made them popular back in the day called Popular, which I don’t care much for. What songs I do care for are a lot off their recent album lucky which is smooth and melodic. If you have not given an ear to this one you definitely  need to head on over to Barsuk recors and give it a listen, and maybe you might even buy it.

Soldiers Song By Dabney Morris

The soldiers song is a favorite of mine. Dustin Diamond is pretty much the band of Dabney Morris. The tunes are really melodic, and you can check out whats going on with the band at Myspace of course. read a little bit about how they got started and when you can catch a glimpse of them in Tennessee.
